What to Expect

STAGE BREAKDOWN

STAGE 1

Pismo Beach to Ragged Point

A controlled but honest opening stage. It sets the tone without burning matches.

A fast coastal start that builds progressively into Big Sur terrain. You roll out from Pismo Beach, settle into rhythm along the Central Coast, and begin the transition into something bigger. The road starts to rise, the ocean gets closer, and the ride becomes real.

Highlights

  • Open coastline riding from the first miles

  • San Simeon stretch with uninterrupted ocean views

  • Elephant Seal rookery — raw California nature

  • First contact with Big Sur climbs

  • Cliffside finish at Ragged Point

STAGE 2

Ragged Point to Carmel-by-the-Sea

This is where the ride earns its credibility. Physically demanding, visually unmatched.

This is the "queen" stage. Big Sur in its purest form. Long climbs, technical descents, and constant exposure to the Pacific. No flat sections, no hiding.

  • McWay Falls — one of the most photographed spots in California

  • Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park

  • Bixby Bridge crossing

  • Carmel Highlands approach

STAGE 3

Carmel-by-the-Sea to Santa Cruz

A necessary reset before the final stage. Still demanding, but efficient.

Shorter. Faster. Strategic. After the effort of Stage 2, this day flows. The terrain opens up, speeds increase, and riders can recover while still pushing.

  • Pacific Grove coastal stretch

  • Monterey Bay riding

  • Moss Landing flats

  • Santa Cruz coastline finish

A world-class finale. This is the moment that defines the entire experience.

The longest day. The final test. You head north with purpose. The road rolls, the wind can play a role, and the anticipation builds toward one of the most iconic finishes in cycling.
