Top 3 Cycling Destinations in California – The Founder's Picks

As someone who's spent countless hours pedaling through California’s most iconic routes, I can honestly say there’s no shortage of breathtaking cycling destinations here. From the coastal cliffs to the desert’s vast expanses, California offers something for every cyclist. But not all routes are created equal. Over the years, I've discovered a handful of routes that, for me, stand out not only because of their beauty but because they offer a true sense of adventure.

So, if you're thinking of tackling some of California's finest cycling routes, here are my top 3 favorites. These are the routes that I return to time and again, and I think you'll understand why when you see them for yourself.

1. Pacific Coast Highway (PCH)

The Pacific Coast Highway is a ride that needs little introduction. It’s the crown jewel of California cycling routes. From the twisty, cliffside roads to the panoramic views of the ocean, it’s a route that checks all the boxes – challenging terrain, spectacular scenery, and a sense of freedom that only the coast can offer.

What I love most about the PCH is the feeling of constant discovery. Every turn brings a new view, a new section of coastline to explore. Whether you're riding along Big Sur’s rugged cliffs or cruising past the quieter stretches near Santa Barbara, you can’t help but feel like you're riding on top of the world. It's tough, it's exhilarating, and it’s absolutely worth every mile.

2. Santa Monica Mountains

For those of you based in or visiting Los Angeles, the Santa Monica Mountains offer the perfect combination of proximity and challenge. This area may be just outside the city, but it feels like a completely different world. The roads here are often winding, with steep climbs and tight turns, but the views make it all worth it.

One of my favorite loops is the ride up to Topanga Canyon. You’re surrounded by rolling hills and sweeping vistas, with plenty of places to stop and enjoy the view. It’s a great place to push your limits, and once you reach the summit, you get an amazing panorama of Malibu and the Pacific Ocean. If you’re in LA and craving a ride that’s both challenging and rewarding, this one's hard to beat.

3. Anza-Borrego Desert

Anza-Borrego Desert is one of California's hidden gems. This vast desert landscape is perfect for those who want to test their endurance skills. It’s not the easiest ride, but there’s something about the wide-open space, the desert’s subtle beauty, and the challenging conditions that make it truly unforgettable.

What I find incredible about Anza-Borrego is the contrast – one moment, you’re surrounded by arid desert with cactus and scrub, and the next, you’re riding alongside beautiful desert flowers that bloom in the spring. It’s a unique kind of ride that’s unlike anything else in California.

Each of these destinations holds a special place in my heart for different reasons. They’re not just about the challenge of the ride – they’re about the sense of adventure, the beautiful landscapes, and the unforgettable experiences you’ll have along the way. Whether you’re looking for coastal views, mountain climbs, or the expansive beauty of the desert, California has something for every cyclist.

If you’re thinking about hitting any of these or any other routes in California, I’d be happy to share more tips and insider details about the best time to go, the routes I recommend, and what to watch out for. Trust me – once you experience these roads for yourself, you’ll see why they’re my favorites.
